The Hansa Towns and the Hanseatic League by Helen Zimmern
A story about an organisation that doesn't seem to have a lot of information about it. Also, stated by Zimmern early on, is an assumption that the reader be familiar with the history of the Holy Roman Empire, of which I have little knowledge, but I thought I'd wing it at any rate.
This didn't prevent me f A refreshing history, written around years ago, with no footnotes, no bibliography, probably replete with historical inaccuracies, so I approached it as it was likely intended, as a story. This didn't prevent me from chasing down a copy of James Bryce's 'The Holy Roman Empire', as recommended by Zimmern, to add to the growing pile of books to read one day.
About This Item
The Hansa League is an interesting contrast to the rise of money in Northern Italy during the Middle Ages, and the means by which a middle class grew out of merchant activities, despite expectations that peasants should know their place in the muck. That the Hansa arose essentially as a defense against robber barons and knights, who felt entitled to rob and kill merchants passing through their lands speaks volumes about the dangers of the times, and even gives a romantic view on the origin of such leagues.

The goal of the Hanseatic League, which was founded when Amsterdam was still a tiny settlement, was to expand commerce and spread knowledge. Dutch cities like Zwolle, Kampen, Hattem, Harderwijk and Deventer were members of this league, and this chapter in their history is still clearly visible in the many 14th and 15th-century monuments.
In other words, when in Holland, a visit to at least one Hansa town is almost compulsory.
